Hello friends!
With all of this wet weather, a lot of horse owners are facing what seems like a never ending battle between the rain and horse hoof care. Often times when immense moisture scours the land, horses hooves take the hardest blows, resulting in infections, abscesses and most commonly thrush. Keeping their hooves healthy can be difficult at times, but when the right steps are taken, the advantages of keeping up with their hooves are always worth it in the end. Remember: No Hoof No Horse!
In our barn, we think working smarter, not harder, is the key to keeping things simple. In the wet weather, we have one simple simple suggestion: Keep their hooves Dry! Thorough, daily cleaning helps prevent any foreign objects from holding moisture in their hooves, which commonly results in the growing of thrush in the hooves. Another tip to keeping their hooves healthy in wet weather is making sure they've got a dry place to stand. Whether it be a run-in shelter, a barn or a stall, even just an hour or two of giving their hooves a chance dry is very helpful in keeping them healthy. For us, our horses are on a daily pasture/stall rotation, so after getting their hooves clean, they have a chance to get out of the weather and dry off.
Let us know what measures you and your barn are taking to keep our four-legged friends dry! Comment below and feel free to visit the rest of our website!
Thanks! -Jess
